Overview
Alexe studied printmaking at Dundee University, where during the later part of her degree she worked intensively with the biochemistry department. Using their electron and light microscopes, she made connections between insects and place. She continued her studies at the Royal College of Art, where her interests grew more predominately towards the darker connotations contained within childhood mythologies. Since completing her MA she has done various residencies including at the ‘Usher Gallery’ in Lincoln, where she curated a small show researching into their collections and more recently in 2012 a residency at the printmaking centre in Cork Ireland, researching into the relationship between place and mythologies.
After completing her PGCE in 2003 Alexe taught on both the foundation and BTEC national diploma fine art courses at Lewisham College, as well as the foundation degree fine art drawing course at Camberwell College.
Alexe has been working at the University of Chester for 6 years, where in 2011 she became a member of the Higher Education Academy and in 2013 she became a senior lecturer.
Teaching.
Alexe is particularly interested in the interdisciplinary nature of Printmaking, which underpins her practice and is influential to her teaching. She teaches on a wide range of Fine Art modules on both the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years degree programme as well as the MA fine arts programme. Over the past 3 years she has been a member on the board of studies. She is also a link tutor for the fine art painting degree course at St. Helen’s.
Research
Alexe’s research is practice based. Her practice centres on the relationship between place, history and mythology, investigated through photography, print, sculpture and site-specific interventions. Recent work has explored both the physical and mythological resonances within remote rural landscapes.
